GÖREME: The Best Place to Stay in Cappadocia Turkey for First Time Visitors & Short Trips
We’ve stayed in Göreme twice and honestly, if you want to be close to the main attractions in Cappadocia, Göreme is the best place to stay.
This buzzing tourist hub is home to the UNESCO-listed Göreme Open Air Museum, a wonderland of fairy chimneys, and trailheads leading to spectacular valley hikes.
Most hot-air balloon rides lift off from here, and Göreme’s viewpoints are among the very best for sunrise and sunset. (And you can just walk to them!)
Add in a huge range of hotels — including some of the best cave hotels in Cappadocia Turkey — plus plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars, and it’s easy to see why Göreme is the top choice for most travellers and first-time visitors.
The beautiful town of Göreme just after sunrise - you can still see a hot air balloon in the distance!
WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN GÖREME
🚶 Walking distance to attractions: The Göreme Open Air Museum is just 1.5 km from the centre (a slightly uphill but easy walk). If you prefer not to walk, just hop on a bus or grab a taxi.
Love hiking like us? It’s also close to most of the valleys in Cappadocia - you’ll find the trailheads for Pigeon and Rose Valleys within easy reach from your hotel, with Love Valley and Red Valley trails just a little further out.
🕑 Perfect for short trips: On a tight schedule or travelling on a tour from Istanbul? Base yourself here and you’ll still be able to tick off all the main activities in Cappadocia without wasting precious time.
🥇 Great for first time visitors: With most attractions at your doorstep, tons of restaurants, cafes and bars, this location is amazing for first time visitors. Many of the popular tours (like the Red tour of northern Cappadocia and the Green tour featuring the underground cities) leave from here.
🎈 Amazing views of the hot air balloons: The launch sites for many hot air balloon tours are in Göreme — this means that most of the hotels here have amazing views of the balloons at sunrise. Plus, our favourite sunrise balloon viewpoint is just 20–30 minutes on foot — totally worth it! There are plenty of others (here and here) to choose from too!
🏠 Variety of accommodation: If you’re looking for the best hotels in Cappadocia, Göreme should be the area that’s at the top of your list. Most hotels here fall into the mid-range to high-end bracket, but as Cappadocia’s main tourist hub there’s truly something for everyone: from gorgeous boutique stays to solid mid-range picks, and even some budget-friendly options.
🍸 Nightlife: Want to sightsee by day and party by night? Göreme’s the place. With plenty of rooftop bars and cafés boasting epic views, you’ll never be short of options to keep you entertained.

UÇHISAR: The Best Area to Stay in Cappadocia for Families and Luxury Stays
Uçhisar, the highest point in Cappadocia, is crowned by the imposing Uçhisar Castle. Thanks to its sweeping panoramas, this is where you’ll find many of the best hotels in Cappadocia with a view.
We think this is a great area for families — the castle is fantastic to explore with kids (we’d highly recommend this tour), and with hiking trails and tons of fairy chimneys nearby there’s plenty to keep tiny travellers entertained. (And as adults, we loved the castle and surrounding area too!)
In our opinion, Uçhisar is more relaxed and less hectic than Göreme, making it a great choice if you’re after somewhere quieter.

Hikers will love that the Pigeon Valley trailhead is nearby, and Göreme with all its attractions is just a quick 10–12 minute drive away.
👪 Brilliant for families: Uçhisar is hands down one of the best places to stay in Cappadocia with family. You’ll find plenty of family-friendly hotels here, with spacious rooms and options perfect for groups.

It features elegant cave suites and rooms decorated with antiques, many with spa baths and private terraces boasting incredible views. The Roman-style heated outdoor pool is especially enchanting — a magical spot to watch the hot air balloons at sunrise.
BEST LUXURY CHOICE: Argos Hotel (⭐9.4)
Arguably the best cave hotel Cappadocia has to offer, this former monastery sits just steps from Uçhisar’s centre. The stylish cave rooms feature open fireplaces and Nespresso machines — some even boast jacuzzis or private pools.
With an elegant pool, spa, gym, and fabulous restaurants overlooking Pigeon Valley and Tiraz Castle, 5 star hotels in Cappadocia don’t get much more luxurious than this.

ÇAVUŞIN: Best Area and Cappadocia Hotels for a Quiet & Remote Stay (Plus Fantastic Hiking and Balloon views!)
We recently spent a lot of time exploring the quiet village of Çavuşin and loved it. Located next to Rose Valley, it sits right in the heart of Göreme National Park.
Despite its slightly remote feel (it’s actually very close to Göreme), there’s plenty to do: we loved following hiking trails from here and visiting nearby attractions like Zelve Open Air Museum. If you’re after more adventure, you can also join horse riding or ATV tours that set off from this area.
If epic sunrise views are on your list, Çavuşin delivers — many hot-air balloons take off nearby, flying over the surrounding valleys. That’s why we think some of the best hotels to stay in Cappadocia are here, where spectacular views are practically guaranteed.
Çavuşin also boasts some of the most impressive boutique hotels Cappadocia has to offer. It’s the perfect place for travellers seeking a more remote, tranquil stay.
The stunning Church of St John the Baptist in peaceful Çavuşin
WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN ÇAVUŞIN
⛪ Close to unique attractions: We loved wandering through the labyrinth of narrow streets and rock-hewn houses in Çavuşin’s charming old village.
Overlooking it all is the Church of St. John the Baptist, with its faded frescoes and ornate carvings. Çavuşin is also just a 4-minute drive from Monk’s Valley (Pasabağ Vadisi) and 8 minutes from the fascinating Zelve Open Air Museum. We got there by bus and on foot, but taxis are an easy option too.
📍 Excellent location: Çavuşin might feel like it’s in the middle of nowhere, but it’s surprisingly well located. Göreme’s restaurants, cafés, and shops are just a 4-minute drive away, while Avanos— with its lively nightlife — is only 6 minutes in the other direction.
If you want an idyllic setting without being far from the action, Çavuşin is one of the best places in Cappadocia to stay.
🥾 Great for hiking: Scenic hikes are right on your doorstep here — wander the Love Valley trail to admire Cappadocia’s most, ahem, “suggestive” fairy chimneys or take on the breathtaking loop from Rose Valley to Red Valley.
Tired feet? Swap your hiking boots for a saddle on a relaxing horse riding tour or crank up the adrenaline with an ATV adventure.
🛏️ Lovely boutique hotels: On the hunt for boutique accommodation in Cappadocia? Don’t overlook Çavuşin.
The village may be small, but it punches way above its weight when it comes to hotels — think gorgeous boutique stays with stylish rooms, rooftop terraces made for balloon-spotting, and top-notch service. Honestly, some of the best Cappadocia hotels can be found in Çavuşin!
🌄 Stunning views: With Çavuşin just a stones’s throw from the hot-air balloon take-off sites and sitting beside the scenic Rose Valley, you'll get used to waking up to jaw-dropping sunrise views from your hotel.
💤 Peaceful and quiet: This area is ideal if you are looking for a relaxing and tranquil stay.

ORTAHISAR: The Best Town to Stay in Cappadocia on a Budget
Dominated by the towering Ortahisar Castle — the largest fairy chimney in Cappadocia — this charming little town offers you a glimpse into a more authentic, laid-back side of the region.
We took this brilliant tour, covering the castle, the famous underground cities, and some of Cappadocia’s most beautiful valleys — it was a fab way to experience the area’s history and landscapes.
As keen hikers and fans of offbeat adventures we loved Ortahisar. From here, we discovered lesser-visited monasteries, ancient churches, and peaceful valleys, often without another tourist in sight. The best part? Many of them are completely free!
If you’re after the best cave hotels Cappadocia has to offer on a budget, Ortahisar is a great choice. Luxury travellers needn’t worry though - some of the best 5 star hotels in Cappadocia are right here, offering superb comfort and incredible views.

Ortahisar — another gorgeous town in Cappadoca and great if you’re on a budget!
WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN ORTAHISAR
📍 Location, location, location: Göreme is only 5km from Ortahisar, around 12-15 minutes by car. Frequent minibuses ply the route between the two towns, so even if you’re not renting a car, you won’t feel stranded in the middle of nowhere. If you like walking, the scenic stroll into the centre of Göreme takes just over an hour.
💰 Budget friendly: Since Ortahisar isn’t as touristy or crowded as Göreme, you’ll definitely find more wallet-friendly options here — with plenty of lovely, affordable budget and boutique stays to choose from.
If cashmonies aren’t a concern, you’re spoilt for choice with some of the best hotels Cappadocia has to offer, featuring in-room hot tubs, saunas, and on-site restaurants.
⛪ Unique attractions: Ortahisar is a fantastic base for exploring some of Cappadocia’s more off-beat attractions. We loved wandering through Hallac Monastery — a huge complex with a spectacular church and two grand halls — and visiting Pancarllık Church, home to beautifully preserved frescoes.
The stunning multi-level Ortahisar Castle is the area’s most spectacular attraction — climb to the top and you’ll be rewarded with incredible panoramic views.
🥾 Excellent hiking trails: Explore the undulating landscape of Pancarllık Valley with its pink-and-white rock formations, old wineries and rock-cut churches — including the amazing Pancarllık Church mentioned above. It’s peaceful, scenic, and wonderfully crowd-free.
You’ll also find great hikes to Balkan Deresi and Uzengi Valley, known for its mineral springs, while the popular Rose, Red, and Love Valley trails are just a short hop away.
If you prefer wheels to walking, this top-rated jeep safari tour is an epic alternative.
🌄 Spectacular views: The panoramic views from Ortahisar Castle stretch over the vineyards, Göreme and Ügrüp and out to Mount Erciyes — completely breathtaking in every direction. In winter it’s one of our favourite places to watch the sunset.
✅ Authentic area: Locals still go about their daily lives, and the cobbled streets are dotted with small workshops selling onyx souvenirs, pottery, and handwoven carpets.

ÜGRÜP: The Best Location to Stay in Cappadocia Turkey to Completely Unwind
Formerly the tourism centre of Cappadocia, before Göreme whisked away its crown, Ügrüp is now best known for having some of the most incredible 5 star cave hotels in Cappadocia Turkey.
Many of the old Greek stone houses, abandoned after the 1923 population exchange, have been turned into gorgeous boutique hotels and picturesque restaurants.
East of Göreme and Ortahisar, this stunning town is ideal if you want all the amenities of Göreme but in a more tranquil setting. Upscale travellers will love having their pick of the best luxury cave hotels in Cappadocia, but there are some affordable stays here too.
We visited Ügrüp for its amazing wine scene - this is the heart of Cappadocia’s wine country, home to numerous vineyards including the famous Turasan winery. We joined this fabulous half-day tour of the vineyards — it was so beautiful and relaxing (and no, that’s not just the wine talking!)
It feels rural, but if you’re craving more hubbub, Göreme is only a 15-minute drive away.
Temenni Tepesi (Wish Hill) in Ügrüp
WHY YOU SHOULD STAY IN ÜGRÜP
💎 Fabulous luxury hotels: If you want a 5 star hotel Cappadocia experience, Ürgüp is the place to be!

⛪ Unique local attractions: Ürgüp has some great sights of its own. We climbed Temenni Tepesi (Wish Hill) in town for amazing 360° views over Ürgüp, plus a saint’s tomb and a handy café for tired legs.
Nearby, the fascinating Büyükakten Yeraltı Evi offers a glimpse into cave life in the 1920s — it’s a beautifully restored, five-storey home run by the same family for four generations.
A short walk away, the Üç Güzeller (Three Beauties) fairy chimneys are well worth a visit, instantly recognisable by their black caps.
Just 6km from Ürgüp is the picturesque city of Mustafapaşa. The architecture here is sublime. Make sure not to miss the stunning Konstantin Eleni Church; Ozbay, Marika and Topakoğlu Konağı — stunning historical mansions; and the wonderful Islamic school, Mehmet Şakir Paşa Medresesi.
🥾 Excellent hiking trails: Just outside Mustafapaşa, the beautiful Gomeda Valley (often called Small Ihlara Valley) is a lush, green escape with a stream, ancient rock-cut churches, ruined cave houses, and dovecotes.
Don’t miss the Alakara and St Basileios churches along the way. It’s far quieter than Ihlara — perfect for peaceful hiking.
🍷 Amazing vineyards and wineries: Wine lovers, you’re in for a treat. Ürgüp sits at the heart of Cappadocia’s wine country and is home to Turasan Winery, the region’s oldest and largest producer, where you can organise your own tasting.
We actually joined this fantastic half-day vineyard and wine tasting tour ourselves, which took us to three local wineries — our guide was incredibly knowledgeable and the whole experience was brilliant. Check prices and availability of this tour here.

Our favourite budget hotels in Cappadocia are:
- Rustic Caves Hotel (we loved our recent four night stay here)
- Diadem Cappadocia Guest House and Hostel
- Zen Cappadocia House
- And the slightly pricer Heritage Cave Suites (this one has proper cave rooms though!)
A room in an underground city is probably a bit too much on the ‘budget’ side…
How many days should I spend in Cappadocia?
We’d recommend spending at least three days in Cappadocia so you can explore the region at a relaxed pace.
If you’re visiting in winter and planning to book a hot-air balloon ride, it’s best to extend your stay to at least four days to allow for possible weather cancellations.
Which part of Cappadocia is the most beautiful?
Honestly, all of Cappadocia is stunning — you don’t have to look far for incredible scenery. That said, Göreme, Uçhisar, and Ortahisar are generally considered the most beautiful areas. Ortahisar was also recently included in Forbes’ list of the 50 Most Beautiful Villages in the World!
Can I walk around Cappadocia?
Absolutely — walking is one of the best ways to experience Cappadocia, especially if you love hiking.
The valleys are made for it, so definitely pack your hiking boots. We’ve walked from Göreme through Red and Rose Valley, Love Valley, and even all the way to Zelve Open Air Museum and Paşabağ (Monk’s Valley).
That said, it is a lot of ground to cover (we were doing more than 30,000 steps a day!). If you’d rather save your legs, taking buses between towns (like Göreme to Uçhisar) or hiring a car makes getting around much easier.
🛬 How to Get to Cappadocia
On a bus in Cappadocia!
✈️ By Air
Flying is the fastest way to get to Cappadocia. The region is served by two airports: Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (around 40 minutes from Göreme) and Kayseri Erkilet Airport (just over an hour away).
Both airports have regular flights with Turkish Airlines and Pegasus from major cities across Turkey.
From Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport, the easiest and most stress-free option is a pre-booked shared airport transfer.
We’ve used this top-rated airport transfer ourselves and wouldn’t hesitate to book it again. It offers door-to-door drop-offs at hotels in Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, Ortahisar, Çavuşin, and Avanos.

Landing at Kayseri Erkilet Airport? The same applies. Booking a shared airport transfer in advance is the simplest choice, with direct drop-off at your accommodation in all the areas above.

🚗 By Car
Driving in Turkey is genuinely enjoyable, and it’s a fantastic way to explore the country.
In Cappadocia especially, having your own wheels gives you total freedom to hop between valleys, viewpoints, and attractions at your own pace.
We usually use Discover Cars — they offer excellent customer service, competitive prices, transparent terms, and a wide choice of vehicles. For everything you need to know before booking, read how to rent a car in Turkey here.
Planning a road trip? The drive from Istanbul to Cappadocia takes around 8–9 hours and is straightforward, with plenty of scenic stretches along the way.
🚍 By Bus
The cheapest way to reach Cappadocia is by bus, with frequent services from Istanbul to Göreme.
Long-distance buses in Turkey are surprisingly comfy — companies like Metro Turizm, Pamukkale Turizm and Nevşehir Seyahat even dish out snacks, drinks and bottled water (National Express would never). We were even given ice cream on one of our trips!
We book through Busbud as prices match the bus station and it’s easy to compare companies and departure times.
The journey takes around 11.5 hours — the perfect amount of time to dive into a book or a podcast.
Conclusion
Whoop! You’ve made it to the very end of our guide to Where to Stay in Cappadocia.
We hope you’ve now got a much clearer idea of which area (and hotel!) is right for you. Choosing the right base really does make a difference — it can take the hassle out of getting around, save you time, and make your trip far more enjoyable.
Now all that’s left is the fun part: exploring this incredible region, waking up early for sunrise balloon views, hiking through fairy-chimney filled valleys…or simply chilling out at a cosy cave hotel and enjoying it all from your balcony.
